ShirlGirl arrived to Fairbanks International Airport after my first 3 weeks of travel from So Cal to Alaska and that was the end of my writing until 2016. I just never seemed to have time to sit down and gather my thoughts. Chatting with ShirlGirl early this morning reminiscing about our adventure and we both agreed that it was a trip of a lifetime. We never stopped going and had we planned it right, we’d still be in the Yukon and Alaska frontiers as I write this 8 months later. The only word that can describe our 2015 summer Alaska adventure is just plain, “AMAZING!”
Not a single day or event put our Alaska adventure over the top, but it was the culmination of so many incredible adventures combined. From the sand spit camp with new friends in Homer, Alaska to the Dawson City, YT experience at Diamond Tooth Gertie’s Saloon, it was all refreshing.
We traveled dirt roads through the tundra and camped at the bottom of a glacier in the forest, all the time we were surrounded by the wilds of nature. It just never got old and we look forward to a return trip in the coming years. We’ve already decided that we would do it in the same fashion, camping remotely and exploring back roads as much as possible.
The people of Alaska and the Yukon Territories are very strong and hearty people. So many of them have huge hearts and are super people, but it takes a special person to be able to survive in Alaska or the YT for a lifetime. ShirlGirl said to me one day when we driving in the backcountry, “I want to move to Alaska into a cabin.”
To this day I am pretending I didn’t hear anything!
