July 1, 2015, Wednesday – RAIN Baby RAIN!
The sun only sets (barely) for less than 3 hours a day in the summer time and the rain has been pounding us all day as we continue to travel towards Fairbanks where we will pick up Shirl Girl from the airport this evening. The first segment of this trip is about to come to an end as ShirlGirl and myself along with our trusty 3 year old pup, Deizel, will set off tomorrow on an adventure we’ve been planning for since 2006!
The ALCAN highway has been one hell of an experience and my experience is that the ALCAN highway makes Mexico Highway 1 throughout the Baja Peninsula look like Disneyland in comparison. You better be prepared because out here on the ALCAN you are basically on your own!
The rain continues as I type this out. The rain has been making for some incredible sleeping as the pitter-padder on the rooftop of the XB II Camper and it lulls me to sleep and I can only hope it holds out for the next month for ShirlGirl as she loves the wet weather!
Tonight Deizel and I are camped on the shores of Birch Lake about 100-miles out of Fairbanks. No one else is in camp along this sandy beach. We simply just backed up to a beautiful sand beach. Unreal that no one else is here. Deizel can’t believe he can run on the beach, run in the forest and only come back when he needs reassurance that he’s not in trouble for taking off without his leash!
The rain slows everything down and after a full day of running north along the Alaskan Highway we are shutting it down for the night!
Word among the bears is American Sniper is the movie of the night tonight.
